The Dangers of Nail Polish and Fake Nails
Nail polish is one of my pet peeves, especially when I see it on the fingernails and toenails of little girls.Your nails are not impenetrable barriers. They're porous. Chemicals painted on your nails and your little girl's nails can be absorbed into your bodies.
One of the main dangers of nail polish is the chemical class, phthalates. These chemicals are classified as possible carcinogens by the EPA. They're also mutagenic. In other words, they can cause genetic damage which may lead to cancer or other diseases. Phthalates can also cause liver, kidney and lung damage. They're suspected of being endocrine disruptors. In addition, they're even linked to infertility and may be associated with early puberty in girls.
What's worse is that you have no way of knowing if they're in the nail products you buy because they are NOT required to be listed on the label.
Acrylic nails are even worse. Because your nails are porous, they need to breathe. When you glue on acrylic nails, you are preventing your nails from breathing. You are cutting off their oxygen supply. Ever notice that when you remove nail polish or acrylic nails that the nail bed is discolored? That's why.
In addition, acrylic nails are applied with chemicals that are toxic. Ethyl methacrylate is most commonly used and is associated with headaches, dizziness and nausea, as well as asthma and allergic reactions.
Although methyl methacrylate was banned in 1974 as a glue for acrylic nails, it is still sometimes used because it's cheap and easy to get.
I generally don't recommend any nail polish even though there are some on the market that claim to be safe and non toxic. Most still have objectionable ingredients. My best recommendation for a polished look for your nails is to give yourself a good manicure and then buff your nails. It looks just like clear nail polish.
If you don't like the way your nails look, unpolished or without acrylics, if they're not healthy looking, then look to your diet. The health of your nails is reflective of the health of your body. You can get information on healthy eating here.
